3 Ways to Prevent Heat Illness

women runningWe know the fact that too much exposure to the sun can cause damage to our health. With more heat waves on the horizon, the rate of risk of heat-related health problems has also increased. Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause heat rashes, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and even heat stroke. With this very fact, we have brought together three important things to remember to keep us safe from any heat illness:

  1. Stay hydrated
Water is very important as it helps regulate body temperature. Our body temperature can rise to dangerous levels if we fail to drink enough water. A healthy person needs around 30 to 50 ounces of fluid per day according to a study published by Harvard Medical School. This is about one to 1.5 liters. To prevent health illnesses, we suggest that you drink water every 15 minutes even when you don’t feel like you are thirsty.
  2. Always seek shade
It is important to take intermittent breaks in the shade especially for those who have activities that are to be done outside the house. We, in Better Living Home Healthcare, encourage you to refrain from spending too much time under the sun. You may also wear a wide-brimmed hat or use an umbrella when walking under the heat of the sun. As much as possible, it is very important to seek shade. If it’s possible, you can work outside during times of the day when it is relatively cooler.
  3. Flex your leg muscles.
In our Health Care Services in PA, we encourage our clients to flex their leg muscles should they stand for any length of time under the heat of the sun. This is important to do because it keeps our blood from pooling in the lower part of the leg. When blood pools in this part, the chances of fainting is increased. Spending too much time standing in a hot environment can also cause heat edema which makes your legs swell. Therefore, flexing your leg muscles can stimulate circulation.

In our Health Care Services in PA, we give serious consideration in the prevention of heat illnesses. However, we also offer high-quality services to those who have heat illnesses.
